On the other end: paint applied over three or more previous layers has a significantly higher peel risk because you’re relying on the adhesion between multiple paint generations, none of which you applied or know anything about. The strip doesn’t peel just the top layer. It peels whatever was most weakly bonded in the stack.

Practically speaking, ask your landlord what paint they used and when. Most won’t know. In that case, do a test. Apply one strip in an inconspicuous spot — behind a door, low on a wall near the trim — press firmly for 15 seconds, wait 72 hours, and pull it at 90 degrees. The whole repair takes maybe 45 minutes of actual work spread over a day of dry time. The anxiety people carry around Command Strip damage is almost always bigger than the repair itself. Which is why the overcautious advice online (“never use them in rentals,” “always patch professionally”) ends up being more paralyzing than the situation actually calls for. Patch it yourself.
